“FYI, it is not new and very common in the industry to prioritize select parts sent to authorized body shops,” wrote a Volvo after sales manager in a mass email recently obtained by Repairer Driven News.
“Effective March 1, 2019, Volvo Cars USA is restricting the sale of several special parts specifically to certified Volvo collision repairers,” Volvo wrote Friday. “The motivation for this initiative is to ensure that in the event that one of these parts does need to be replaced, it will be replaced by A trained and skilled professional. In this way, we can ensure that our vehicles will function in any future event as they did when they first rolled off the production line.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, Volvo still appears to have not removed at least some of the parts from its online parts sales site, raising the question of whether components in the wild could still accidentally end up in non-certified shops or retailers in defiance of Volvo’s spirit of restriction.
However, once this supply dries up, authorized Volvo shops should be the only ones able to obtain the components. The OEM’s notice to dealerships stated that it would ship parts directly to authorized shops – and only to those shops.

“If you have a VCCF that needs one of these parts, you can order it as a ‘Drop Ship’ through the parts app,” Volvo wrote. “As part of the ordering process, you will receive a drop-down list of authorized VCCF ‘Ship to’ locations. If you attempt to order a limited part on a critical order or in stock to be delivered to a non-VCCF operation, the order will be canceled.”
“So if any shop other than an authorized Volvo shop calls and is looking for one of these parts, they should be informed that Volvo is restricting the sale of this part to authorized Volvo shops only,” the sales manager wrote.
“I can confirm that we have restricted certain parts on all MY16+ carlines,” wrote Jim Nicholls of Volvo Brand and Technology Communications in an email on March 5. “This program has been implemented to ensure that certain body parts are installed by Volvo Certified Technicians Collision. centers.”
He wrote that Volvo felt the restrictions were consistent with Massachusetts’ “Right to Repair” law that gives the aftermarket the same access to repair information and technology as dealerships.
