Can a small town hot rod shop run successfully while also making a stunning Great 8 finalist? The answer is yes. You just have to look at Smitty’s Custom Automotive in Tiffin, Ohio.

Pa Owner Chris Smith’s father has always been a hot rodder and when he was laid off from a long job in the late-’90s, he collaborated with Chris to open Smitty’s Custom Automotive. In the early years, restoration, custom, and truck work consumed much of the shop’s time. Right now, Chris says about 90-percent of his work is hot rods, race cars, AutoCross cars, and restorations. Another 10 percent includes collision work for some customers, plus truck accessories and upgrades.

Goodguys AutoCrosser Bob Gawlik has Smitty who built this Foxbody Mustang using a combination of Speedtech and Detroit Speed parts, plus an LS7 for power.

What started as a father/son company evolved after Chris’ father retired in 2009, into a son/brother team. Today, the growing business includes Chris’s high school-age son, Jason, who is studying mechanics at tech school. The shop will add custom machine work in-house once his son’s training is complete.

Family matters at Smitty’s Custom Automotive. Owner Chris Smith is shown here with his wife, Lynn, and son Jason, who is learning the trade and will be adding his machining skills to the business. Chirs brother Tony is also involved in the business.

“He had a snow day today and he was out in the shop wrenching,” Chris said during a recent interview. “I can teach you something else, but we need a machine and he will do it.”

Chris says he has always been involved in racing on a personal level, both road and AutoCross. The success of the race helped build the store’s image and reputation. Chris ran the RideTech race program for years to show that air suspension cars could handle, perform, and compete on the race track. He piloted RideTech’s yellow ’72 Corvette to the Goodguys AutoCross Street Machine points championship season in 2017 and was always a tough competitor, regularly finishing near the top whether he was racing at Goodguys or in other AutoCross competitions like the Optima Ultimate Street Car.

Chris recently started a race program for Speedtech and now maintains a fleet of race cars for the Speedtech team and several customers. “Right now, there are five race cars in the shop without motors for offseason upgrades,” Chris said. Speedtech’s third generation Camaro race car in store now will be campaigned this year by Jason.

Chris doesn’t just build competitive race cars, he’s a fierce competitor. He regularly runs atop the ladder at Goodguys AutoCross events, and placed fourth at last year’s Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational in a second-gen Camaro, surrounded by Corvettes and Lamborghinis in the top five.

The store maintains a wide inventory of parts and accessories and races to help sell parts. “Customers bring their cars in to be built or maintained,” says Chris. “There are dozens of cars here several times a year for maintenance.”

This ’70 Camaro was almost finished when we visited the shop. It has many Detroit Speed suspension components and LT4 power. Definitely on the road this season.

Nearly 10 years ago, Chris built a C10 Chevy pickup to compete on the AutoCross circuit alongside his ’69 Camaro and sister Nova. “We took everything and then raced the road,” he said. “It hooked me.”

Camaros have become an important part of the company’s image, from show cars to race vehicles. Chris said his first major build was a ’69 Camaro for a customer. “We’ve been open 22 years and there hasn’t been a first-generation Camaro in the shop yet,” he said.

Chris’ son Jason will race this third generation Camaro this season. It has a full complement of Speedtech suspension components and will get LS7 power.

In addition to race vehicles, Smitty’s Custom Automotive also produces high profile show vehicles. In 2010, a ’34 Ford three-window coupe called the Kraken was a Great 8 finalist at the Detroit Autorama. In 2014, a Chevelle called Chevicious was the overall Street Machine winner in Detroit.

Whether it’s a full race track player or a custom car-show-cruising, Chris said building to customer expectations is the guiding principle for everything they do. “When we started, everyone was sitting at the car and trailer show there,” Chris said. “Everything has big wheels, air, and slams into the ground. Now everyone wants it to run like new
