How to create more attic storage space: Heap of Change Challenge

Howdie folks.

Songbird here with my first project of 2015. I created more storage space in the landing on my attic. Couldn’t be more timely…. Couldn’t be more welcome……

After the Christmas frenzy and the aftermath in my craft room that resulted in no floor space, no table space, stuff everywhere and no where to put anything I knew something had to be done.

Enter my Canadian friend Donna.

She was dealing with some after-Christmas chaos of her own, aptly named ” heaps of shame” and challenged herself and us to start the new year fresh, organized and with heaps of change.

I knew I had to get in on that action. Stat!

Turns out I was not the only one. Three more ladies jumped in and decided that enough is enough and the chaos has to stop.

We are all hoping that our projects in January (and February if we still have gusto to keep going) will inspire all of you to jump in too. No project is too small or too simple to be entered and we will be your cheering team all the way.

My craft room has many functions, it is my “mess up and play with the glue gun and glitter room” , my “I love anything fabric and thread sewing room”, my “I need peace and quiet to work, office room”, my “I still have hope for my Etsy shop, vintage stuff stock room” , and our “what is this, put it in the attic for storage, room”. My craft room used to be our attic that I confiscated. From the perspective of floor space it is quiet huge. That is when you actually measure the floor. Go up one meter and the space becomes a whole lot smaller due to all the sloped walls. There is barely a stretch of full size wall available so simply adding some closets or wardrobes is not an option. And I really needed more attic storage space!

So I came up with this:

Use that itty bitty piece of space on the attic landing and puzzle and rearrange some cabinets until every last centimeter of that space has a function.

That it looks quite cute was an added bonus.

I stacked two old cabinets from days galore, and carefully measured the width and height of the space that remained.

I than examined the Ikea catalogue as if they sell chocolate until I found an option that would work and I could afford.

That low three drawer cabinet is from the Ikea Ivar series. It is meant to be hung in one of those wall units, but it works as a stand alone too. I decided to pretty it up a bit with some paint and glaze and added handles.

I also used another Ikea cabinet I already owned with lots of drawers: the white little Helmer cabinet. And of course a couple of those Moppe cabinets that also got a paint and stain treatment.

And then I filled up every last bit of empty space with anything I could think of that needed a home.

Some paper tubes come in handy for paper roll storage.

Everything got the option to be labeled properly. I am still working out what I am going to store where here, so I haven’t actually made any labels yet, but having all those label holders in place will make that last job pretty easy.

So much storage and clean space created…..

As long as you keep looking at this corner and don’t turn your head or look behind you. There are more corners in this little attic landing that need some order and some storage options and maybe a little pretty too.
